Best Coffee Near Hagia Sophia: Specialty Coffee Within a 5-Minute Walk
Yes, you can get proper specialty coffee within five minutes of Hagia Sophia: walk across Sultanahmet Square to the Hippodrome (At Meydanı), and you will find Roots & Roasted at At Meydanı Cd. No:10/1, right beside the Hagia Sophia ticket office, open every day from 09:00 to 19:00. We are not the only café in the neighbourhood, and we will not pretend to be. But if what you want is an espresso pulled from beans roasted by a championship-level roastery rather than a cup poured from a thermos, this post tells you how to find us and what to ask for.
The short answer
Roots & Roasted is a small specialty coffee house on the historic Hippodrome, the long open square that runs alongside the Blue Mosque. Our beans come from Calibre Coffee, the Istanbul roastery behind the 2023 World Coffee Roasting Championship runner-up. We are rated 5.0 on Google across 49 reviews (as of September 2026), we have indoor seating and a shaded terrace on the square, and we open at 09:00, which matters more than it sounds in Sultanahmet.
How to walk here from Hagia Sophia
Stand with your back to Hagia Sophia’s main façade and look across the park. The Blue Mosque is straight ahead, past the fountain and the rows of benches. Walk toward it along the central path, roughly five minutes at a tourist’s pace, and you will come out onto the Hippodrome, where the Egyptian Obelisk stands on its marble base. We are on the square itself, a minute from the Obelisk, next to the Hagia Sophia ticket office. Look for the Roots & Roasted sign and the terrace tables under the trees.

If you are coming from the Basilica Cistern instead, it is about six minutes; from the Blue Mosque, three.
What to order
Everything on the board is made to order by baristas who dial the grinder in each morning. Prices are in Turkish lira and include the cup, the seat and the view:
- Espresso ₺280 and Double Espresso ₺340 — the honest way to taste what Calibre’s roasting does.
- Flat White or Cortado ₺340 — small, milk-forward drinks that suit a mid-walk break.
- Filter / Black Coffee ₺340 — for a longer sit with the square in front of you.
- Turkish Coffee ₺370 — brewed in a cezve, served the traditional way; if you are only in Istanbul once, order this at least once.
- Iced Latte ₺350 or Cold Brew ₺340 on hot afternoons.
Oat and almond milk are ₺90 extra. The full list, including our matcha range and homemade lemonades, is on the menu page.
There are handmade desserts in the case every day. One TripAdvisor reviewer called the baklava cookie “a must”, and it tends to sell out by mid-afternoon.
When to come
Hagia Sophia’s queues build from mid-morning. The calmest way to do the square is to arrive early, have coffee first, and walk to the gates while everyone else is still at their hotel breakfast. We open at 09:00 precisely for that reason. The reverse also works: visit the monuments in the last hour before they close, then sit on our terrace as the light goes gold on the minarets. We close at 19:00.
How to tell a good café in Sultanahmet
Whether you choose us or somewhere else, a few signs separate a real coffee bar from a tourist kiosk: the beans are ground when you order, the roaster is named, the espresso is timed rather than guessed, and the barista asks how you take your milk. Look at the machine and at the people behind it. In our case, you can see both from the doorway.
You can browse the gallery to see the room and the terrace before you come, or simply follow the minarets to the square and look for us beside the ticket office. We will have a table.
